Kibale National Park is Uganda's premier destination for chimpanzee tracking safaris and primate walks. Located in western Uganda near Fort Portal, this tropical rainforest is home to the highest density and variety of primates in East Africa, including over 1,500 chimpanzees. Its beautiful jungle trails, rich birdlife, and connection to nearby crater lakes make it a must-visit for tourists seeking eco safaris in Uganda or a primate-focused wildlife adventure.
Did You Know? Kibale Forest contains the highest concentration of primates anywhere in East Africa. With 13 species living side-by-side—including the endangered chimpanzee—it's often called the "Primate Capital of the World." Chimpanzee tracking permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and are limited to protect the chimpanzees. Terrain Safaris secures permits on your behalf—book 3-6 months in advance for peak seasons (Dec-Feb, Jun-Sep). Permits include park entry, guide services, and one hour with the chimpanzees. CHEX permits (full-day experience) are even more limited and require early reservation.
Yes! The Fort Portal region offers rich cultural encounters with the Batooro and Bakiga communities. Visit traditional villages, learn about local crafts like basket weaving and bark cloth making, enjoy community-led nature walks, or participate in coffee farm tours. Terrain Safaris partners with community-based tourism initiatives ensuring fair compensation and authentic, respectful interactions.
Absolutely! Kibale is home to 13 primate species. Alongside chimpanzees, you may spot red colobus monkeys (often seen in large, noisy troops), black-and-white colobus, L'Hoest's monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, olive baboon, blue monkey, red-tailed monkey, and more. Our expert guides know the best trails and times to maximize your primate sightings.
Chimpanzee tracking permits are required for all participants aged 15 and above. Children under 15 cannot participate in chimp tracking for safety and conservation reasons. However, families with younger children can enjoy guided forest walks, birding tours, crater lake hikes, and cultural experiences. Terrain Safaris designs family-friendly itineraries that accommodate all ages while prioritizing safety and conservation guidelines.
