Bird Watching
Uganda, known as the “Pearl of Africa,” is a paradise for bird lovers. With over 1,080 recorded bird species more than half of all birds in Africa—Uganda offers some of the richest birding experiences on the planet. From the prehistoric-looking Shoebill stork to the vibrant Great Blue Turaco, every birder’s dream can come true here.
The Shoebill is Uganda’s most sought-after bird. Standing up to 5 feet tall with a massive shoe-shaped bill, this elusive swamp-dweller is found in papyrus wetlands like Mabamba Swamp near Lake Victoria and Lake Mburo National Park. Early morning canoe trips offer the best chance to spot this silent, statue-like predator as it hunts lungfish and baby crocodiles.
Our expert guides know the exact channels and feeding grounds where Shoebills nest—giving you a 95%+ sighting success rate during dry seasons (June–September & December–February).
